Grandmother of Child Shot in Head Tells Community To “Step Up”

Grandmother of Child Shot in Head Tells Community To “Step Up”

“Cuz a cop didn’t shoot him? Is that why nobody angry? … We only march when its against the police, huh?”

She walked up to that microphone on a mission, and didn’t hold back.
And she’s absolutely right.
Hopefully the community follows her lead, and collectively realizes what she’s saying – that the police are not the threat that they need to worry about.

Aight.
My name is Shamanda. Grew up in north minneapolis, from north minneapolis.
I want to say one thing, I’m just trying to figure out why’s this community not angry?
Why do yall only march when black on black crime happen?
Why aint nobody mad about my 10 year old grandson fighting for his life at north memorial?
Why are we doing a news conference on Penn and Broadway and there’s 2 kids at north memorial right now fighting for they life, from a gunshot wound to the head?
When is north minneapolis gonna stand up?
When is enough enough?
How are yall so comfortable, and so cool, and so cool, and so calm, and there’s 2 kids that’s fighting for they life? Yall tell me how. How. How. How are yall at home resting? How are yall at home not doing anything? It’s 2 kids. An 8 and a 10 year old fighting for their life. They should be at school right now. They should be doing what kids do. When did it become cool to shoot a kid? When do you get brownie points for shooting a kid? You dont get no justification for shooting a kid. Yall got 2 kids. Yall done traumitized 2 families.
My grandson didn’t deserve this. That little girl didn’t deserve this. They were playing in they yard. He had just got out of school. That little girl was minding her business.
When are yall gonna do something about these guns? Yall keep on giving these people a slap on the wrist and they shooting our kids now. When is enough enough? When are yall gonna stand up and do something? Why is this community not pissed off? I’m angry. I’m mad. When are yall gonna stand up? Why are we at north memorial right now and aint none of yall here… why yall here? Why yall here?
What are yall doing here? What is this doing here? This aint doing shit!
My grandson is fighting for his life. This aint doing nothing. Yall aint doing nothing. Yall not doing nothing. This aint nothing.
When is yall gonna step into the community and do something in the community?
In the community, this where we live at. This where we got to be at. This where my grandson come play at, and he can’t. He’s fighting for his life. Trinity’s fighting for her life.
When our northside, when is enough enough? When is enough enough?
I suffered a heart attack on tuesday from this, I had heart surgery on thursday. I shouldn’t even be out here right now but I’m still fighting for my grandson. You know why? Because that’s all I got. That’s all I got – I’m gonna be his voice until he able to speak. I’m gonna speak for him, because he didn’t deserve it.
A 10 year old with a gunshot wound to the head.
Why is this community not angry? Yall tell me that! Cuz it was a black kid, is that why? Is that why?
Cuz a cop didn’t shoot him? Is that why nobody angry? Yall gotta be kidding me!
We got to do better than this. We got to do better than this. This is unacceptable. This is unacceptable.
It done got so that we just immune to it now? We just turned our heads, now we just immune… NO we’re not immune. No, I’m not gonna sit down, I’m not gonna stop talking about it. Yall might go on with yall life but this is our life. This is what we live every day – for the last SIXTEEN DAYS. SIXTEEN DAYS. I’ve seen yall a few days. Sixteen days though, we’ve been at North Memorial. We have prayers every day at 6pm at North Memorial, aint none of yall there. None of yall there. Everybody in this community should be angry! Why yall not mad? Aint nobody mad? It’s two kids now, what, it’s gonna be a third one this weekend? This is two kids now. When are yall gonna step up?
A 10 and 8 year old – they aint even began life – and whos to say they even gonna have life.
Lets say, lets talk about THAT. Lets talk about that. Lets talk about the repercussions that’re behind this. So I’m talking to the mayor, the chief, the community activists, everybody. Where yall at? When are yall gonna do somethin? When is enough enough? 2 kids. 2 kids. In less than 16 days. 2 kids. Yall make that make sense to yall and it might make sense to me too, cuz it’s not adding up right now.
But yall keep my grandson in prayers. Keep little Trinity in prayers cuz they fighters, they fighters.
Them little babies is fighting, but why should they have to fight for something like this? Why should they? Where everybody at?
I can’t believe everybody did a news conference and the families weren’t invited. How do yall do a news conference without the families invited? We suffering. We the ones suffering. We the ones hurting. We live here. Yall go home. We live here, every day. How are yall not mad? Where is everybody at?
We only march when its against the police, huh?
We aint gonna march against 2 kids though getting shot, we aint gonna stand up for their rights though.
We aint gonna do that, that’s too much like right.
We gotta do better, Minneapolis. We gotta do better, this unacceptable here, totally unacceptable.
2 kids. 2 kids in less than sixteen days, with gunshot wounds to the head… to the head!
This coulda been all bad, but by the grace of god they still fighting.
Yall keep em in prayers. And I’ll hope… I’ll just HOPE… that the mayor, the chief, and anyone else that may be involved, I hope yall step up. Because if not, this gonna be a deadly summer. It’s gonna be a deadly summer – of kids… of kids… our kids aint safe now. Our next generation, these is our future doctors, nurses, senators, mayors, police chiefs.
Where they coming in at? When we gonna protect them? When we gonna stand up for them?
Yall wanna talk about something, stop talking and DO something. Enough talk. We see it every day. We buy and pass it every day. We see it. We see it. But when is something gonna get done?
News conferences, we can have these every day. Every day we can have a news conference, but when is some action gonna get took care of? Consequences. Sacrifices. Yall got to remember this is a 10 and 8 year old kid fighting for they life from a gunshot wound. A gunshot wound to the head. Cmon yall, we gotta do better than this. We gotta do better.
